THE BARF DIET:
The letters are an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food ( or Bone And Raw Food ).
At Kennel "Boulevard of Fame" we BARF feed all our dogs. We started when our first bitch kept putting on weight no matter how little " ordinary " dog food we were feeding her. She also seemed to be forever hungry. Then when our collaborator "Kennel Bullsaint" started using raw food, we did too. That changed the mood of our bitch right away. She became happier, more quiet, her coat became smoother and her colouring more characteristic. All in all we got a bitch that loved eating her raw bones and was satisfied.
The BARF diet is made up of 60 - 80 % raw meaty bones, that is bones with about 50 % meat and of 20 - 40 % of fruits and vegetables, offal, meat, eggs or diary food. ( in Denmark it is not advisable to use chicken in BARF due to the excessive use of pharmaceuticals in the chicken industry. )
The theory is based on the fact that the dog's digestive system is intended for raw meat, bones and carcasses. A lot of features have been changed in today's pet dog, but not the digestion, so therefore it's optimal to BARF feed it.
The animal's daily feed is
like this:
From 3 weeks to 6 months
about 10 % of its own weight.
From 6 to 18 months about 5
% of its weight.
Grown dogs with a normal
activity level: about 2 % of its weight.
Grown dogs with a high
activity level: about 3% of its weight.
It's important to give the
dogs a varied diet.
One day per week without
food is good for the grown dog.( Never the puppies. ) Best if not same day of
the week.
The benefits of the BARF
diet are:
Odourless
breath
Cleaner, stronger
teeth
No tartar
Stronger
bones
Smaller amount of
stools
Shiny and self-cleaning
coat
A stronger
mentality
